Paseo Travel Mobile App

Traveling, while it should feel like a getaway, can at times be more stress than it's worth.

PASEO makes travel plans fun to create, easy to navigate, and remain flexible so that you can still seize opportunities as they come.

The Problem

Planning for a trip and navigating a new place are easily the two most stressful parts of travel. You may have the places you want to visit in one app and your hotel reservations in another, without a clear idea of where they all are in relation to one another. Not to mention, coordinating all of these pieces beforehand with your friends can be time-consuming and disjointed.

The Solution

Paseo makes travel plans fun to create, easy to navigate, and flexible enough that you can still seize opportunities as they come. With your friends, you can add your reservations and travel spots onto the map, vote on your favorites, and then mark them off as you go. With the help of Paseo’s explore page and unique recommendations, you’re sure to create the perfect trip.

USER RESEARCH

Proto-Persona

We created a proto-persona to understand what safety concerns a mid-early 20s solo traveler has, particularly people from more at-risk groups, like POC, LGBTQIA+ people, and women.

Survey

We then created a survey to learn which travel concerns were most pressing for our participants and how they may be alleviated.

  • 19 responses

  • Participants mainly pulled from users in an LGBTQIA+ Facebook group

  • Participants are mostly white and from Minnesota

  • While we expected participants to list safety as their main concern with traveling, most participants had planning and navigating listed as their main constraints

Interviews

We also conducted interviews to better understand our participants’ travel experiences and how we may improve them.

  • 6 interviews

  • Particpants mostly married, from Minnesota, and enjoy traveling
Like the survey, most participants had planning and navigating listed as their main constraints

  • Participants particularly didn’t want to have to over-plan a rigid itinerary but had trouble finding a middle ground

  • Most particpants also emphasized planning ahead, having their phone on them, and being able to orient themselves as the key factors to feeling safe while traveling

User Persona

Informed from our survey and interviews, our final user persona was much more focused on how to prepare for a trip and how to navigate once there than the safety features we had originally envisioned.

DEFINITION

User Insight Statement

An easygoing traveler in her mid-20s wants her travels to be low-effort to plan, easy to navigate, and flexible enough that she can still seize new opportunities as the trip unfolds.

I Like That I Can...

  • View my reservations and tickets in a timeline format

  • Use the map to see all my pins/routes in one place

  • Check off the places I’ve visited so I can see what’s left on my list

I Wish I Could...

  • Work on the same trip collaboratively with my friends

  • Be recommended other similar places to visit

  • Link my hotel reservation and tickets to auto-populate info

What if I Could...

  • View other user’s trips for inspo?

  • Create a day-by-day itinerary?

  • Assign each pin a category? (to eat, to dance, etc.)

Storyboard

I created a storyboard for our user persona Nicole to show how downloading and using Paseo for her upcoming trip helps her prepare and navigate so she can focus on enjoying time with her friends.

WIREFRAMING

Competitor Analysis

Before beginning wireframing, I decided to do some market research to see the features and goals of the other travel planning apps available currently.

TripIt (215k ratings, 4.8 stars)

Trip Scout (3.7k ratings, 4.7 stars)

  • Pro: Easy to add travel spots

  • Con: Does not allow for travel spots to be added to itinerary without discrete date

  • Pro: Saved locations for a trip can be viewed on the map
Con: Can’t collaborate or add your own comments

Mapify (87 ratings, 4.0 stars)

  • Pro: Includes an explore page to gain inspiration

  • Con: Most recommendations are based solely on photo ops

User Flow

Before jumping into sketches, I wrote out the full user flow from onboarding to adding a pin to a collaborative trip from either a map or list view.

TESTING

Testing Plan

I had three tasks to complete and six testing participants. I also continued to iterate as necessary throughout testing as I picked up on patterns or improvements that could make the app more intuitive.

Testing Insights

Issue 1 Onboarding

Problem

  • Distinguishing where to login when initially shown the Create Account screen.

Solution

  • I created one solo page just to choose between sign up and login.

Issue 2 Orienting

Problem

  • Knowing when they were on the trip page or the pins page.

Solution

  • I added indentations on the bottom tab and a swiping motion when opening a trip so that movement was visually established as well.

Final Thoughts and Next Steps

While we initially set out to provide more explicit safety features, we found helping travelers orient themselves in a new environment would both make them safer and ease their largest traveling concerns.

With Paseo, traveling becomes a breeze by preparing you for how to navigate a new city and giving you a sneak preview of the potential your trip has to offer.
